UMKC Summer Debate Institute - 2009

Staff

UMKC is excited to announce the staff for the 2009. We are excited to have some returning faces as well as some new and exciting staff members for 2009. You can read the bios below.

Justin Stanley, Assistant Director

Louie Petit, Assistant Director

Louie will be returning to the UMKC Summer Debate Institute for the 6th year. He just completed his first year as the Assistant Director of Debate at the University of North Texas. Louie previously coached at Missouri State University where earned Masters in Communication Studies. He debated at William Jewell College and was good enough to win some speaker awards and the occasional out rounds. Louie is a native of Kansas City and debated at North Kansas City High School where he was a 3 time qualifier to NFL's and winner of many of Kansas City tournaments. He was also the primary argument coach of 2008 National Debate Tournament and Cross Examination Debate Association National Tournament Semifinalist. Coached two teams in three years to a First Round At Large Bid to the National Debate Tournament. Coached the Top Speaker at the 2008 National Debate Tournament, 2008 CEDA National Tournament, 2008 University of Kentucky Tournament, and the 2008 Wake Forest University Tournament. Formerly taught at the University of Kansas Jayhawk Debate Institute, Spartan Debate Institute, Missouri State University Debate Institute, and the Mean Green Workshops at the University of North Texas.

Martin Osborn

Martin just finished his fifth year of college debate at Missouri State and is a four-time qualifier to the NDT. He has cleared at major national tournaments including Georgia State, Kentucky, Harvard, Wake Forest, both legs of the California Swing, Northwestern and CEDA Nationals and was the top seed at Kentucky in 2006. He has received top ten speaker awards at University of Southern California, Fullerton, University of Texas at Dallas, Georgia State and Kentucky (where he was awarded top speaker in 2007). Martin has previously worked at Kansas University Jayhawk Debate Institute, University of Missouri Kansas City Debate Institute, Missouri State Debate Institute, Michigan University's Classic, and the Michigan State Spartan Debate Institute. Martin finished his debate career with semifinal showings at CEDA Nationals and the National Debate Tournament, receiving top speaker at both.

Kelly Winfrey

Kelly Winfrey has been involved in policy debate for 15 years, beginning with a successful career as a high school debater in Missouri. After high school, she had a competitive debate career competing for for Emporia State University. Kelly has coached successful high school debaters in Missouri, and has worked at several summer debate institutes over the past several years. She has also coached some of the top debaters in the country during her time at Missouri State University and at the University of Kansas.

Ben Warner

Ben was a successful high school and college debater who has coached at Missouri State University and the University of Kansas where he is currently earning a PhD. He has coached multiple teams to victories in late elimination rounds of both the CEDA National Tournament and the National Debate Tournament (NDT). Teams he has coached have received multiple first round at large invitations to the NDT and been invited to both the Kentucky and Dartmouth Round Robins. Last year he coached a team all the way to the final round of the CEDA National Tournament.

Terri Easley

Terri is currently the Director of Debate at Johnson County Community College.

Bryce Dietrich

Bryce Dietrich is an Alum of UMKC and the UMKC Summer Debate Institute. He qualified to the NDT several times and was in the elimination rounds of the NDT his senior year. He has also coached multiple teams to the elimination rounds of both CEDA and the NDT. He is currently in Graduate School at the University of Illinois.

Malcolm Gordon

Malcolm Gordon is currently the Assistant Director of Debate at UMKC. He was in the elimination rounds of the National Debate Tournament 4 times, including winning 2nd place in 2007. He was the top speaker at CEDA Nationals his senior year, and 5th speaker at the NDT. Malcolm will be a special guest to the camp. He will not be leading a lab, but will participate in running the camp and interact with students.

Scott Herndon

Scott Herndon, MA, Associate Director of Debate. Formerly a coach at Kansas State University, Scott has been at the University of Texas at Dallas since 2002. In that time UTD has qualified for the National Debate Tournament 6 years in a row, reaching the elimination rounds in 2009, maintained a Top 25 national ranking, and reached the elimination debate of CEDA nationals 5 straight years, including a run to the semi-finals in 2009. An experienced instructor and judge Scott has taught at the World Debate Institute, Baylor Debate Workshops, the International Debate Education Association Conference, and the University of Kansas. Scott has also been recognized as the southwest region critic of the year, in 2004 and 2009.

Brian Rubaie

Brian Rubaie is in his third year debating at the University of Texas-Dallas. He is also currently in his third year as an assistant coach at Coppell High School in Dallas, where his teams have qualified for the TOC each of the last two years and advanced to the elims at the Glenbrooks, Greenhill, Harvard and other major national tournaments. He graduated from Shawnee Mission East High School in Kansas, where he earned speaker awards at several national tournaments and the 2006 Kansas state championship. He has qualified to the National Debate Tournament twice and was in the Octos of CEDA, where he lost to some guy named Martin Osborn. He has advanced to elimination debates at Harvard, Wake Forest, Kentucky, Texas, USC, CEDA Nationals and several other regional tournaments. This will be his third summer working at a summer institute, but his first back home in Kansas City.
