Information for Residents staying in the dorms: The dorm rooms have a mini-fridge and microwave available for student use. The beds are twin XL. Please remember to bring sheets, pillows, blankets, and bathroom supplies with you to the camp. A small amount of spending money is recommended for laundry, snacks, and various other expenses. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be provided as part of your tuition as residents during your two weeks at the camp. If you need to leave the campus for any reason during the camp, you must have a parent/guardian fill out a permission to leave form (Attached below). You will not be allowed to leave without this form completed.
Information for Commuters: You should plan to register on July 10th in the lobby of Johnson Hall. Registration is from 3-5 and then we will break for dinner. The first camp meeting will be at 6:00 in location TBD. Meals will not be provided unless you have purchased a meal plan. Camp Schedule: The camp will begin at 9:00 a.m. each day with some exceptions for weekend days. The camp will end each day at 9:00 p.m. We will take a one hour break for lunch and dinner. Commuters who have not signed up for a meal plan will need to make arrangements for lunch and dinner. Food is available for purchase with cash in the UMKC cafeteria. A more detailed scheduled of each day’s activities will be available at registration on Sunday, July 10th.

Each student receives 1 hour of college credit included in their tuition. Students can receive college credit up to three hours for their participation in the UMKC SDI. Matt Vega–Director of Debate at the University of Missouri – Kansas City, and Director of the Summer Debate Institute.

Justin Stanley–The Director of Debate at Johnson County Community College. The Johnson County CC Debate Team was the 2010 & 2011 Community College National Champions. Justin has coached several NDT qualifiers, elim participants and has coached a team to the finals of the National Debate Tournament.

Bryce Dietrich–Currently an Graduate Student at the University of Illinois, Bryce has been a lab leader at the UMKC SDI for the past 8 years. Bryce was a highly successful high school and college debater and coach. Bryce has a great reputation as a lab leader that is able to communicate complex debate ideas to debaters with limited debate experience.

Linda M. Collier–Director of Debate and Head Coach of Barstow Debate, returns to ### after a successful 2010-11 season. She qualified a team to this year’s TOC, had the first place JV team and speaker at the Ohio Valley (KY) and her novice teams were second at the Glenbrooks, won the Golden Desert (Las Vegas), Omaha Westside (NE) and Park Hill (MO) tournaments as part of the 80 trophies and awards they collected. Before moving to Barstow, Linda proudly re-established the UMKC debate program in 1986 and went on to win the first of four national championships, the Brady Lee Garrison Award for new programs in 1987. That success was followed by the CEDA National Championship of ’94, and the National Sweepstakes (points) Championship of both CEDA and the NDT in ’95. She coached 20 years at UMKC, qualifying teams to the NDT from 1996-2007, leaving the year after UMKC won the Herbert Walker Trophy as the runner up at the 2007 NDT .

The UMKC Summer Debate Institute is founded on the winning tradition of the UMKC Debate Program. SDI hires the finest staff and utilizes high-quality instruction facilities. SDI instruction can help you to succeed wherever you debate. We will provide quality instruction in all forms of debate, from lay judge adaptation skills to national circuit debate. SDI will focus on teaching performance and theory, as well as research techniques. You will receive hundreds of pages of completed research before the Institute even begins. This allows SDI to spend more time improving your debate skills.

Curriculum

SDI offers a thorough curriculum of theory, style, research and topic instruction. The High School Institutes all are geared towards NFL Policy Debate. The Middle School Institute teaches general debate and argument. We will have lectures on general debate theories, such as topicality, that cover the foundations of topicality and then apply it to the topic. Specific seminar topics will include:

The SDI Experience

SDI is hosted on the beautiful campus of the University of Missouri-Kansas City . UMKC has highly advanced instruction facilities that will enhance the camp experience. The dormitory is situated close to the cafeteria and to instruction rooms for SDI.

Instruction will occur from 9am to 9pm, and will include sufficient breaks for meals and recreation.
Team-taught laboratories allow each student to receive intensive individualized instruction.
Labs divided by experience level will allow each student to get the proper instruction for her/his level.
